The Sabatini Cardigan is a splendid addition to a collection that pays homage to the majestic terrains surrounding iconic volcanoes, paired harmoniously with the Etna Tee and Vesuvius Tee.

Sabatini boasts a top-down construction with a crew neckline and drop-shoulder elegance, ensuring perfectly fitted shoulders that eliminate excess fabric around the underarms. Featuring a delightful combination of textured and airy stitches, this cardigan is tailored for light garments and offers a generously wide, oversized fit. Elevate your creation with optional pockets, hip shaping, and rounded corners at the front, all tastefully finished with an elegant edging and buttons band. The Sabatini Cardigan beckons you to unleash your creativity with numerous customization options, allowing you to craft a truly one-of-a-kind garment.

What sets Sabatini apart is its commitment to size inclusivity, ensuring that the shoulder drops gracefully in the same spot for all makers, irrespective of their size. The meticulous details woven into this cardigan promise a timeless piece that you’ll find yourself reaching for time and time again.

Material Requirements

YARN

This garment is designed to be made with three different yarn options, while maintaining the same gauge:
Fingering weight wool (or wool blend, or wool-like) + mohair–silk lace held double: This combination of yarns creates a light but warm cardigan. Great for transitional weather. The mohair adds a touch of luxury and since yarns are double stranded, it is a great option for stash busting, mixing colors or creating an easy fade effect (as in the pattern sample using minis)
Sport weight yarn: This option is perfect for a light summer cardigan since the stitches are open, lacy and airy. Use cotton, linen or bamboo for warmer climates (as in the brown sample). Use wool for cooler weather while still keeping the fabric light.
DK weight yarn: Using a heavier weight with the same gauge will create a fuller more compact fabric which, in turn, will create a much warmer and structured cardigan.
Color Options
The pattern is written to change colors every other row (i.e. every row pair). When working with fingering + mohair, change only the fingering weight yarn color while the mohair remains the same to create a lovely unified marbled effect. When working with sport and DK weight, you can also opt to change colors in the same manner to create a striped garment. For all options, using a single color throughout is also a good choice, as in the brown sample.
For a cropped garment
1240 (1340, 1460, 1575, 1710) (1845, 1960, 2140, 2230) m
13550 (1465, 1600, 1720, 1870) (2020, 2145, 2340, 2440) yds
For a full-length garment
1745 (1900, 2085, 2230, 2430) (2615, 2780, 3000, 3145) m
1910 (2075, 2275, 2440, 2655) (2860, 3035, 3285, 3435) yds
Long tapered sleeves use approximately 430 (440, 455, 485, 505) (550, 585, 635, 645) m / 470 (480, 500, 530, 555) (600, 640, 695, 705) yds;
The edging and pockets use approximately 15% of the total yardage for full-length and 6% for cropped length.
Add 145 (160, 175, 185, 205) (220, 235, 245, 260) m / 160 (175, 195, 205, 225) (240, 255, 270, 285) yds for every additional 10 cm / 4 in of body length.
Yardage provided includes 5% extra for swatching and margin of error. Adjust amounts for desired length.

Swatch Instructions

Stitch pattern for gauge, measuring a pair of sc/dc rows and a pair of sc/3-dc cl rows:

Ch odd number of sts.

Row 1: Ch1, sc to end, turn.

Row 2: Ch2, dc to end, turn.

Row 3: Ch1, sc to end, turn.

Row 4: Ch2, 2-dc cl in first st, ch1, sk1st, *3-dc cl, ch1, sk1st, rep from * to last st, 2-dc cl in last st, turn.

Repeat the 4-row pattern for the desired gauge swatch size.

On all Row 1 reps make sure to work into all sts and chsps alike.

Be sure to block and check gauge before starting by making a big enough gauge swatch (at least 15 x 15 cm / 6 x 6 in).

Certain materials might sag, and fabric may extend too much with drape, so adjust hook size appropriately.
